How do heat pumps work?

The heat pumps 'outdoor unit' includes a heat pump which extracts heat from the ambient air and transfers it to the indoor unit via refrigerant piping. 

The heat pumps 'indoor unit' receives the heat and uses R-134a refrigerant to increase the temperature. Although it may sound strange, a refrigerant is a substance which is used to transfer heat.

The heat is transferred from the refrigerant circuit to the water in the system. This means that temperatures can get as hot as 80°C without using an additional heater.
